Automation Center of Excellence (CoE)

An automation center of excellence is the internal team responsible for an organization's automation program. The CoE sets development standards, governs the pipeline of automation candidates, manages platform environments, and owns the governance processes that keep automation safe, compliant, and scalable.

What a CoE is responsible for

  • Development standards - Coding conventions, naming standards, error handling requirements, and selector guidelines.
  • Pipeline governance - Reviewing and approving automation candidates before development begins and before they reach production.
  • Environment management - Orchestrator configuration, licensing, queue management, and credential management.
  • Risk and compliance - Ensuring workflows meet security requirements, pass audit checks, and have appropriate change documentation.
  • Team enablement - Training developers, onboarding citizen developers, and maintaining reusable component libraries.

CoE maturity levels

A reactive CoE is fixing production incidents. A proactive CoE has repeatable governance checks before release, a way to compare workflow health over time, and enough review history to answer an examiner's questions without scrambling.
